Chronic Pain and Illness
Evidence-based therapy for coping with chronic pain or chronic illness.
The Impact of Chronic Pain or Illness
When your body is in pain or unwell, the effects often ripple through every part of life. Daily routines become more difficult, relationships may feel strained, and your sense of identity or direction can shift in painful ways. Living with chronic pain or illness can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself and uncertain about what lies ahead.
Recognizing the Emotional Effects of Chronic Pain or Illness
The emotional toll of pain and illness can be just as significant as the physical symptoms. You may experience:
Grief for activities, relationships, or futures that no longer feel possible
Frustration or discouragement after medical treatments that haven’t brought the relief you hoped for
Anxiety or fear about the recurrence or worsening of illness
Stress, fatigue, or emotional strain that make it harder to care for yourself or connect with others
These challenges can leave you feeling isolated, overwhelmed, or hopeless. Therapy provides a space to address these experiences directly.
How Therapy Helps
Therapy offers space to make sense of the emotional weight of pain and illness, while transforming the way you live with it. In therapy, we will:
Build coping strategies that support both physical and emotional well-being
Develop tools for managing stress, pain, and fatigue more effectively
Process grief and fear in a safe and supportive environment
Help you reconnect to your values and sense of purpose, even when symptoms persist
The aim is not to erase pain or illness but to expand your ability to live a life that feels meaningful and whole.
My Approach to Treatment for Chronic Pain or Illness
I work to help you feel grounded when life feels unpredictable. Together, we’ll focus on identifying what matters most to you, building sustainable coping skills, and creating a sense of vitality regardless of whether symptoms continue.
I integrate Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based approaches. I also use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help you connect with your own reasons for change and strengthen your ability to sustain it over time. These approaches create flexibility and resilience, with the goal of shifting the focus from what cannot be controlled to what can foster greater balance and purpose.
